Make your child’s first flying experience a good one

A child’s first flight can be scary so spend some time preparing them for the trip.

First you want to talk to them about flying. Tell them what you will have to do at the security checkpoint. Then walk them through getting on the plane and buckling up like they are in a car taking a ride. Tell them the kinds of noises they will here and describe what turbulence feels like. Tell them it feels like a roller coaster or the scrambler how it goes up and down and sometimes bounces around.

Explain that due to the change in altitude their ears will fill up with air and they will feel some pressure but that this will go away after take-off and landing. Children and adults both find relief from sucking on candy or juicy chewing gum, the act of chewing and swallowing relieves the pressure on the ears at take-off and landing. Be careful when choosing the juicy treat for small children to avoid the possibility of choking during turbulence. Yawning is also a good way to relieve the pressure on your ears.

Read them books on flying and traveling so it will peak their interest and let them be at ease. If you fear flying then try not to pass that fear on to your kids because it may stay with them as they grow up. Make their experience fun. Play fun games that involve all the things they may be scared of on a plane. Reassure them that they are safe in the plane.

How can I avoid getting wrinkles in my clothes?

When you are on a trip you don’t want to spend your time ironing your clothes. Here’s some ways to avoid wrinkles while traveling.

  • Don’t over pack your bags.
  • Travel with clothing that is less likely to wrinkle.
  • Roll up T-shirts or underwear.
  • Take the proper size luggage for your trip. Too big a bag will allow your items to move around and make damage and wrinkles more likely.
  • Button the buttons on shirts so items will hang properly.
  • Use plastic dry cleaner bags between items. Make sure the dry cleaner bags do not have any advertising printed on them. The ink can rub off and end up on your clothes.
  • Unpack as soon as possible.
  • And the best one - Hang wrinkled items in the bathroom while you shower to help steam out the wrinkles.

Do I have to remove my shoes at the airport security?

In recent months security at our airports have changed again. You now are required to remove all types of footwear. It used to be that only if you had boots or thick soled shoes then you had to take them off. Many types of footwear can be used to carry prohibited items so it’s just easier these days to have everyone take their shoes off.

Due to Homeland Security threat levels being raised for the aviation sector, it’s critical to protect those who travel by air.

All types of footwear must be placed on the X-ray machine to be screened. If you refuse to remove them then you will not be able to board your flight.
